I am being made to exercise tonight. D: I enjoy being lazy. I'm not fat (yet). Why do I have to run? *has horrible flashbacks of soccer conditioning*
Anyway...
I was randomly trying to figure out who to correctly welcome someone in French, since I speak next to none of the language ("Bienvenue [female form]" is apparently used by itself, but "Bienvenu [male form]" can be used within a sentence if it should be the male form of the word. I'll try to remember that for the rest of the French applicants at
o_e_subs. 8D Do let me know if I've gotten it wrong again? XD) and ran across
this site. It's about English, not French.^^
Now, I do not have the best grammar in the world, but I did at least know allllllmost everything that I looked at there. I still have to think about lie v. lay in the past tense, even though I know the rule. I also know that, from a linguistic perspective, languages naturally evolve over time, and I'm cool with that. However, I feel that we should still try to slow that process down through education. After all, if we're not all on the same page, then it can be very hard to communicate.
The point of this is, while I do see these specific mistakes out in the world around me, they're also very prominent in subtitles. When I edit (my first try came out "eito" XD) or do quality check for a team, these are things I change often, among others. Before any translators out there feel hurt: we love what you do, and if you don't want to change, I won't think less of you--especially if English is your second/third/very-far-down-the-list language. It's also very hard to remember these things when translating, I've found from my experience, most especially if you already know someone will be checking the work after you. XD I do know that some of my fellow subbers (sometimes :x) appreciate the notes I make when I edit, so a few of them may be curious about this site. It very clearly lays out the point of confusion and provides both positive and negative examples. The technical language is very easily ignored as well. *is in the sciences and stays far away from the humanities XD*
If anyone (subber or not) finds it interesting, please let me know. :Dv
